Just passed your theory test? Here is what to do next
Passed your theory test? Here are the next steps: your two-year certificate, booking the practical the right way, and staying test-ready.
Passing your theory test is a real milestone, and it deserves a moment of celebration. Once you have enjoyed it, there are a few sensible steps to take so that your pass works as hard for you as possible. Here is what to do next.
Note your certificate expiry date
Your theory test pass certificate is valid for two years from the date you pass. You must pass your practical test within that window, or you will have to sit the theory test again. Write the expiry date down somewhere you will see it, and treat it as a deadline to work toward rather than a date that quietly creeps up on you.
Book your practical test the right way
You can now book your car practical test. From 12 May 2026, only you, the learner, can book or manage that test, so do it yourself through the DVSA licensed service on GOV.UK. The fee is fixed at £62 on weekdays and £75 on evenings, weekends and bank holidays. Choose a test centre you genuinely intend to attend, because from 9 June 2026 you can only move a test to one of your three nearest centres.
Remember what the theory pass does and does not do
A theory test pass lets you book and sit the practical test. It does not, on its own, let you drive unaccompanied. Until you pass the practical test you are still a learner: you must be supervised, display L plates, and follow the usual learner rules. Knowing exactly where you stand keeps you on the right side of the law while you wait for your practical date.
Keep your knowledge fresh
There can be a long wait between passing your theory test and sitting your practical, and waiting times in many areas are still significant. The Highway Code knowledge you worked hard for is just as useful behind the wheel as it was in the test. Keep it ticking over, because your examiner will expect you to show it in your driving, and it makes you a safer new driver.
Focus on your practical preparation
Use the time before your practical test well. Build lessons in early, get plenty of varied practice including independent driving and different road types, and work on the show me, tell me questions. The learners who pass the practical first time are the ones who treated the wait as preparation time, not dead time.
Help the next learner
If a revision tool helped you get your theory test pass, a quick honest review is one of the kindest things you can do for the next nervous learner deciding how to prepare. Tell them what actually worked for you: the mock tests, the hazard perception clips, the road sign flashcards. It takes a minute and it helps someone else feel ready.
Congratulations again on your pass. Theory Test Passed is glad to have been part of it, and we wish you the same success in your practical test. Drive safely, and enjoy the road ahead.
